What is Active Aging Week?

Active Aging Week is an annual campaign launched by the International Council of Active Aging to promote the benefits of healthy aging and lifestyles. During this week, organizations offer free wellness activities and exercise programs for older adults to participate in, with the goal of showcasing their age-friendly wellness programs and promoting a positive message of aging.

When is it held?
Active Aging Week is held during the first week of October, starting on the first Monday of the month. In 2024, it will take place from September 30 to October 6.

Is there a fee to become a host site?
No, there is no fee to become a host site for Active Aging Week events.

Is there a charge for participants?
No, there is no charge for participants. The purpose of Active Aging Week is to make wellness activities and exercise accessible to as many older adults as possible, regardless of their ability to pay.

Who can host an Active Aging Week event?
Active Aging Week events can be hosted by any organization that fosters an environment that encourages the participation of older adults. These organizations can include continuing care retirement communities, active living communities, senior centers, health clubs, parks, recreation centers, and age-restricted apartment or condominium complexes.

What types of activities are offered?
Active Aging Week offers a variety of activities, such as group walks, group exercise classes, yoga and Pilates classes, and tennis or golf games. Organizations may also offer previews of upcoming activities, such as fall prevention programs or aerobics classes.

Is there a benefit to hosting an Active Aging Week event?
In addition to promoting healthy activities for older adults, hosting an Active Aging Week event is a way to contribute to a global movement. It has been reported that such events increase participation levels and attract new members for health clubs.

Do I need to register to host an activity?
ICAA encourages host organizations to register their events so that they can be recognized on the campaign's website, Facebook page, and the Journal of Active Aging. ICAA may also suggest registered hosts to media outlets for possible coverage.
