What is Active Aging Week?
Active Aging Week was initiated by the International Council of Active Aging to celebrate aging and to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle on a national scale. Organizations provide single or multiple activities, for free to older adults, to share the positive messages of Active Aging Week and showcase their age-friendly wellness programs. The campaign’s overriding goal is to give as many older adults as possible the means to experience wellness activities and exercise in a safe, friendly and fun atmosphere.
When is it held?
Active Aging Week is held the first Monday in October. In 2022, Active Aging Week will be held October 3-October 9.
Is there a fee to become a host site?
No, there is no fee to host Active Aging Week events.
Is there a charge for participants?
No, there is no charge to participants. The goal of Active Aging Week is to introduce healthy lifestyles and exercise to as many older adults as possible, without cost being a barrier to participation.
Who can host an Active Aging Week event?
Any organization that has an age-friendly atmosphere is welcome to participate. Events have been offered at continuing care retirement communities, active living communities, seniors centers, health clubs, parks, recreation centers and apartment/condominium complexes that are age-restricted.
What is an age-friendly atmosphere?
ICAA's Age-Friendly Philosophy designates programs that provide the information, access and motivation people need to become and stay active. Much of ICAA's Age-Friendly programs are free to the public and to industry professionals, based on the association's belief in the value of active aging. Programs include the Age-Friendly Fitness Facility Locator, an online directory of qualifying facilities, consumer information (“How to select an age-friendly fitness facility” and “How to choose an age-friendly personal trainer”) and professional resources for planning physical space, evaluating equipment and creating an atmosphere that appeals to older adults.
What types of activities are offered?
Examples of activities offered during Active Aging Week include group walks (both strolls and faster paced), group-exercise classes, yoga and pilates classes, and tennis or golf games. A popular offering is a “preview” of upcoming activities offered as lecture/demonstration and audience participation. For example, a multiweek fall prevention program, or aerobics class.
Is there a benefit to the organization for hosting an Active Aging Week event?
Beyond the value of helping older adults experience healthy activities, host organizations have reported doubling or tripling participation levels. Health clubs report enrolling new members.
Do I have to register to host an activity?
ICAA encourages you to register so we know how many organizations offered activities and can recognize your participation on the campaign’s website and official Facebook page, as well as in the Journal of Active Aging. ICAA can also suggest registered hosts to media outlets for possible coverage.
