Woodcrest Villa (A Mennonite Home Community)...Although Covid-19 presented unique challenges, Active Aging Week 2020 was a great success due to new and creative resident engagement opportunities. Our week was filled with fun and informative socially distanced outdoor activities. Our kick-off event, “Hydration for Active Adults,” provided information and samples on hydrating food and beverages. Residents found the other outdoor events to be quite interesting, including a “Try Tai Chi” class, “Fitness Trail Walk” (and trail mix!), “One Hour Scavenger Hunt,” and Bocce and Corn Hole tournaments. One of the most popular events was the “Plant Therapy” workshop, held on our beautiful outdoor plaza on a glorious Autumn day. Residents designed and created their own succulent planter and learned of the many health benefits of gardening and flower arranging. We also livestreamed many events via our in-house television channel, including: “The Covid-19 Crisis – What It Has Done to Our Bodies,” “Name That Lancaster Landmark,” and “Career Day,” where residents discussed their past careers. One of the most popular virtual events was “The Newlywed Game,” where 4 resident couples faced off against each other. We are certain that many of these events, though born of necessity during a pandemic, will remain part of future Active Aging Weeks.
