Tell us what you did during Active Aging Week to redefine the term "Active."

Living with a chronic condition presents life challenges and sometimes hard losses, as the aging process claims time and energy. CommonBond Communities partnered with Pedal and Roll for Parkinson’s to “Redefine Aging” during the 2019 Active Aging Week by creating a safe opportunity for residents and community members to reclaim a commonly sacrificed activity: cycling. The event allowed individuals to be fitted for one of 5 styles of recumbent, adjustable, adaptable trikes. Volunteers and CommonBond’s Health and Wellness Team were on hand to provide assist with helmets, walking/running alongside riders, taking instant photos for riders to share the experience with family and friends, providing water and snacks, and to cheer/encourage riders along the way. Yard signs with positive affirmations, humorous cartoons, and some healthy facts lined the parking lot and a bike path section which runs between the properties of Shingle Creek Commons and Kingsley Commons; CommonBond Communities in North Minneapolis, MN. Some reasons participants shared that cycling is such a common sacrifice included: loss of balance/coordination, inability to finance an appropriate safe cycle, lack of confidence to ride alone, and lack of help/support/time from someone to share the experience with regularly. *I have releases for photos.
