Rhythm is at the core of the human experience. The first sound a human hears is the sound of a heart beat in the womb. It is instinctual in how the body operates. Research has also shown that participating in group music experiences can reduce anxiety, increase emotional contentment, and help create a sense of community with those who participate. Kelly Dee, MMT, MT-BC has designed a program called "Drumming Out Dementia," to reduce the common symptoms associated with sun downing. Mrs. Dee received her Masters in Music Therapy with a specialization in dementia in 2014. She has used her education as a foundation for the program. Residents participate in a group rhythm making experience using percussion instruments, and NSL drums by Remo. NSL drums are also called "Not So Loud" drums which is perfect for memory care. Residents can feel the vibration without the harsh noise of regular drums. Over the past month Ms. Dee has been taking data after each session to measure a reduction in sun downing behaviors. The data supports the program. "Drumming Out Dementia" is a physical program that helps residents "get the wiggles out" before sun downing sets in.
